Dynamic Earth visit by S2

On 20 and 26 January, S2 enjoyed a trip to Dynamic Earth organised by the Geography department. Pupils furthered their understanding of the evolution of the Earth and its inhabitants during a tour of the expedition and fun activities in classroom workshops hosted by Dynamic Earth education officers.

After a look at the planets, the world’s population and a Richter Scale, pupils proceeded to a ‘Time Machine’. As time rolled back, S2 passed through snap-shots of the world; JFK’s assassination and WW2 until the Big Bang and the start of time.

Pupils learnt about the birth of the universe before moving into a room containing rocks and lava where they watched and listened to an explanation of how the earth formed. The floor shook to add effect!

Next after travelling millions of years into the future, the pupils landed in Scotland during the last ice age and watched as the land was shaped by ice. Continuing at their own pace, S2 walked ‘A History of Life, Evolution and Extinction’. They moved onto looking at life in the oceans and at the poles. The ‘Polar’ section proved to be of particularly interest and the ice berg exhibit was a big hit.

As pupils travelled back to the present day, they took an impressive flight through the different biomes of the world in a 4D cinema experience before landing in the Rainforest where they heard fascinating stories about the strangler figs and the animals that live there from their personal guide.
